Smith Mountain Lake

Spend the ultimate day outdoors on and around this lake gem. The mighty Smith Mountain Lake covers over 40 miles and holds 20,000 acres of water. Over 500 miles of scenic shoreline surround it. With temperatures heating up, the lake is a popular destination for Memorial Day or the entirety of the weekend.

Stop by the marina, rent a jet ski or boat, and hit the water. Other ways to enjoy the lake are canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and swimming. The Smith Mountain Lake views are stunning by land, but there’s something special about absorbing them from the water. Fishing piers, camping, picnic spots, a theater, and miles of scenic trails offer additional ways to enjoy the outdoors.

Philpott Lake

For another Memorial Day water wonderland, you won’t want to miss Philpott Lake. Combine highly celebrated fishing with 100 miles of undeveloped shoreline, and this 3,000-acre lake is a top contender for your weekend celebrations. If casting a line for smallmouth bass and trout is heaven to you, then Philpott is your lake.

There are six beach areas, all sandy, where you can relax and soak up the sun before taking a refreshing dip in the water. Goose Point Recreation Area, Bowens Creek Recreation Area, Horseshoe Point Park, and Salthouse Branch Recreation Area are among them.

Roanoke River Blueway
